Dry Skin From Air Conditioning: A Simple Barrier Routine

Calm bedroom with a curtain moving under an air conditioner, a mist bottle and a glass of iced water on the bedside table

In the UAE, many of us spend most of the day in air-conditioned homes, offices, cars and malls. Cool, dry air can leave skin feeling tight, flaky or dull, even if it looks shiny by midday. The good news is that a simple routine of light hydrating layers and the right moisturizer usually makes skin feel much more comfortable.

Signs your skin is feeling the air conditioning

  • Tightness soon after cleansing
  • Flaky patches around the nose or cheeks
  • Makeup that looks dry or patchy by the afternoon
  • Skin that feels dry underneath but still looks oily

Skin can lack water and still produce oil. That is why heavy creams are not always the answer here.

Two jobs: add water, then hold it in

Barrier and hydration care covers two linked needs. Hydrating layers such as toners and essences add water to the skin. Moisturizers and barrier creams help hold that moisture in and keep skin comfortable. A simple routine needs one of each.

Step 1: a hydrating layer

An essence is a slightly thicker hydrating layer that goes on after cleansing or toner and before moisturizer. The COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence is positioned for a stressed skin barrier, dryness, dullness and sensitivity, and it sits under any moisturizer.

Step 2: the right moisturizer for your skin

Choose texture by how your skin feels by midday:

  • Dry under the shine: a lotion or water gel cream gives a light layer that sinks in fast.
  • Dry most of the day: an everyday cream such as the Anua Barrier Reboot Daily Moisturizer, a ceramide cream the brand calls airy yet moisturizing.
  • Tight and flaky: a richer barrier cream, especially at night.

You can use a lighter moisturizer by day and a richer cream at night if your skin feels different morning and evening.

Topping up during the day

Long days in cool, dry air can leave skin feeling tight by the afternoon. A cream mist adds moisture without redoing your routine. The Dr.Althea 345 Relief Cream Mist has a cream layer and an essence layer that you shake together, and you can use it over makeup. It is an extra, not a replacement for your moisturizer.

Small habits that help

  • Use lukewarm water rather than hot when you cleanse.
  • Apply your hydrating layer on slightly damp skin.
  • Keep sunscreen as the last morning step, even on days mostly spent indoors near windows.
  • Add one new product at a time and patch test if your skin reacts easily.

A simple barrier routine

  1. Morning: cleanser, essence, moisturizer, sunscreen.
  2. Evening: cleanser, essence, moisturizer or richer barrier cream.
  3. During the day: a cream mist when skin feels tight.
